Convergys Executive Thomas A. Cruz Honored with 1998 Eagle Award

November 23, 1998

(Kansas City, Missouri; November 23, 1998) -- Thomas A. Cruz, vice president, human resources and administration for Convergys Corporation, is the newest recipient of the 1998 Eagle Award for corporate leadership and community service. The honor, from the National Eagle Leadership Institute (NELI) was presented last weekend (11/21) at the group's 6th Annual Eagle Awards Gala and Excellence in Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. The honor was also profiled in the November issue of CareerFocus magazine.

The Eagle Award began in 1993 as a special recognition presented by CareerFocus magazine to acknowledge pacesetting African and Hispanic Americans who have made significant leadership contributions to their companies and communities. Early Eagle Award winners founded NELI to make the award a continuing tradition and to provide a forum for networking, mentoring, and professional development.

"Each year we establish a new leadership paradigm with our selection of Eagle Award winners, and the selection of Tom Cruz of Convergys Corporation this year is a perfect example of the high quality of our selections," said Georgia Lee Clark, president of NELI. "Mr. Cruz has demonstrated the type of outstanding leadership and civic involvement that further enhances the award's prestige and notoriety and has proven to be a tremendous asset to his company and his community."

"My selection as a recipient of this great honor creates feelings of both excitement and appreciation within me," said Cruz. "I feel that, through this award, the National Eagle Leadership Institute is recognizing that such programs play an integral part in promoting diversity in the workplace and the visibility of the many diversity programs in place in the business community. As an active participant in several minority mentoring programs, I have had the opportunity to see these programs in action and I know they work to assist minorities in their career development."

Mr. Cruz is chairman of the board of INROADS of Greater Cincinnati-Dayton, Inc., an organization that promotes the career development of minorities in business and industry. He serves on the Advisory Board of Project Succeed Academy. He was a member of the 1996-97 Leadership Cincinnati Class XX where he was the Education Project Team leader and was Group IV chair of the Greater Cincinnati 1994 and 1995 United Way Campaigns. Mr. Cruz has also served as the vice-chair of the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement and Awards Conference.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL EAGLE LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Founded in 1993, NELI is a not-for-profit organization that began after the first Eagle Awards presentation sponsored by CareerFocus magazine. Those early Eagle Award winners decided to make the award a continuing tradition and developed a national organization to perpetuate networking, mentoring, and professional development opportunities.

NELI and its programs serve as a prestigious and effective avenue through which corporations can recognize the achievements of culturally diverse professionals who contribute to the bottom-line success of their organizations.

The Institute is a growing network of outstanding professionals, youth, and corporate partners who share a common mission - to celebrate the success of culturally-diverse, rising professionals and empower them to help others succeed.

The Eagle Awards are presented annually by NELI, with CareerFocus as its publication of record and key promotional forum.
